Certainly! Here’s a general article on the importance of dental hygiene and its impact on overall health:
Dental Hygiene: A Gateway to Good Health
Good dental hygiene is more than just about maintaining a bright smile; it’s a critical component of overall health. The mouth serves as a window to the rest of the body, providing signals of general health disorders. For instance, gum disease—particularly periodontitis, which is an advanced stage of gum disease—can be linked with other health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
The Mouth-Body Connection
The mouth is teeming with bacteria, most of which are harmless. However, without proper oral hygiene, these bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Moreover, certain medications—such as decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers, diuretics, and antidepressants—can reduce saliva flow. Saliva washes away food and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth, helping to protect you from microbial invasion or overgrowth that might lead to disease.
Systemic Health and Oral Hygiene
Studies suggest that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with severe gum disease (periodontitis) might play a role in some diseases. And certain diseases, such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS, can lower the body’s resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe.
Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene
To maintain good oral health, practice good oral hygiene every day. For example:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss daily.
- Eat a healthy diet and limit food with added sugars.
- Replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn.
- Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings.
- Avoid tobacco use.
- Also, contact your dentist as soon as an oral health problem arises.
Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health. By taking good care of your mouth, teeth, and gums, you can help prevent problems elsewhere in your body.
Remember, a healthy mouth is the start of a healthy body!
Your smile is often the first thing people notice when they meet you. Once, an attractive smile was the dream of the most and was limited to Hollywood stars. Nowadays, thanks to recent advances in cosmetic dentistry,a gorgeous smile became on hand for everyone.
At َQaser alsiwak Dental Center, our patients can choose from a variety of options to address their cosmetic concerns, such as gaps between teeth, chips and cracks, permanent stains or discolorations, dark silver fillings, etc. These options include:
Bleaching:
Also called Tooth Whitening. We provide you with the latest technology of bleaching methods which ranges from prescribed at-home treatments, to a one-hour Laser procedure for those wanting quick and immediate results for a special occasion such as weddings, graduations, or just for those who want a whiter and brighter smile now.
Bonding:
A procedure that involves molding a tooth-colored composite resin onto a tooth to change its shape or color. Bonding can usually be accomplished in one office visit.
Veneers:
Porcelain laminate veneers are probably the most esthetic means of creating a more pleasing and beautiful smile. Veneers are a fantastic way to fix front teeth that are dark or have spaces. They require a minimal amount of tooth reduction (approximately .5 mm) so you do not have to worry that tooth structure will be compromised, and the end result is a beautiful smile.
Today, dental implants are the best option for replacing missing teeth. Implants look and feel extremely close to that of natural teeth, and unlike bridges and false teeth, they last for a life time.
They are used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or an entire arch. They can be used in young people as well as persons with advanced age. It is a highly successful technique that has improved the quality of life for many people because of their natural feel, function and look.
Periodontal Surgery:
Periodontal treatment involves eliminating infection around the teeth and correcting the gums. Early treatment of these conditions, are critical as periodontal disease can easily lead to significant problems such as loss of teeth and gum infections. Periodontal disease has also been tied to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and low birth-weight in premature babies, along with causing even more trouble for diabetics.
Periodontal therapy can also improve your smile through recent advances in soft tissue surgery and gum reshaping. The following are some procedures performed at our center.
Treatment of Gum Recession & Thinning:
Recession of the gums is when the tissue around the tooth reduces, where as gum thinning is when the tissue around the tooth is thinned. These can result in root sensitivity to hot and cold foods, as well as an unattractive appearance of the gums and teeth.
To solve these problems, a thin piece of tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth and placed around the tooth by a procedure called gingival grafting. This tissue provides a stable and healthy band around the tooth increasing the tooths longevity.
Cosmetic Crown Lengthening:
Excessive gum display during smiling can be improved with periodontal therapy. Tissue is removed to provide a more pleasing and attractive smile.
De Pigmentation:
Black smile is also considered by some individuals as an unattractive smile. This is due to excess melanin pigmentation. Removing this pigmentation can be done through a surgical procedure or by Laser technology.
An implant is made up of a titanium post that is surgically placed beneath a patients gum. The implant remains below the gum and eventually fuses to the bone of the jaw to provide a stable, highly secure structure for the replacement tooth. The replacement tooth is actually a porcelain crown that is eventually secured to the implant.
